Dead zones and slow zones ruin what should be a fun streaming or gaming session. The Rock Space AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 Repeater helps to solve these issues by extending your Wi-Fi’s range and providing much more reliable coverage throughout your home. I had the pleasure of testing this repeater to see if it could solve my lagging and dead zone issues.
Overview of Features
The Rock Space AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 Repeater is the company’s latest repeater designed to work with Wi-Fi 6 networks. However, it also works well with Wi-Fi 5. Not only is it designed to reduce lag and aid in dead zones, it’s also made to improve network utilization for busy home networks. This means no one has to deal with a slow connection just because another device has priority.
Thanks to double 5dBi antennas and a dual-core processor, the repeater helps boost your range, covering up to 1,500 sq. ft. This means better signal quality for multiple floors or even outdoors.
If you constantly have numerous devices connected to your network, MU-MIMO technology helps even out your network so all devices get a consistent, reliable connection. The repeater’s made to support over 35 simultaneous devices, which can be ideal for smart homes. Plus, there’s support for the WPA3 security protocol to keep your network safer.
Both AC and AX devices are supported to provide coverage for your current and future devices. Plus, you get dual-band speed up to 1.8 Gbps. Max speeds are 1201 Mbps for 5 Ghz bands and 574 Mbps on 2.4 Ghz bands. A dual WPS button allows you to jump between bands based on your needs.
While it’s a wireless repeater, you can also connect a device directly with the wired Ethernet port. This can give you an even more reliable connection for gaming and streaming.
Using the same Ethernet port, you’re also able to turn the repeater into a wireless 2×2 MU-MIMO access point. All you have to do is connect the repeater to your router, open the Rock Space repeater settings page, and switch modes to AP mode.
In the Box
The Rock Space AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 Repeater is made to be easy to install, which is always a plus. All that’s included in the box is the repeater itself with antennas already attached, the plug, an Ethernet cable, and a quick start guide. There’s also a step-by-step video guide on the Amazon product page.
The only thing you’ll need to set everything up is a device to connect to the Wi-Fi network.
You’re supposed to be able to have everything ready to go in just minutes, but I ran into a hiccup right away. This may have been just a fluke, but the plug was incredibly difficult to connect. I’m honestly not sure why it’s not built in with folding tines or something similar. It took around 10 minutes for the plug to finally click into place. On the other hand, it’s definitely secure. As a side note, I can’t remove it now.
Once that challenge was complete, it was time to start connecting the repeater to my network. It’s a fairly simple process overall:
- Plug in the Rock Space AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 Repeater into an outlet in the same room as your router.
- Connect to the Rock Space repeater network.
- Create a login and connect to the network you want to extend.
- Connect to your new extended network.
- Move the repeater where you need it.
- Re-connect to the extended network and log in to adjust any settings.
Overall, it was straightforward, and the quick start guide was surprisingly useful with each step clearly laid out along with a few troubleshooting tips if something doesn’t go correctly.
For me, I didn’t get an automatic login creation screen like I was supposed to, so I had to enter the repeater’s IP address instead (which is mentioned in the guide). Then, when I moved the repeater and tried to reconnect, nothing worked right.
After repeating the process, I was able to connect to the new extended network, but it took around 10 minutes before I could get the required login and settings screen to load. Until that loaded, I didn’t have an active Internet connection.
Overall (minus the plug incident), I would say I was ready to connect within 15 minutes, which still isn’t bad. Since then, I haven’t had any issues logging in to the settings for the repeater or connecting to the networks.
Repeater in Use
Now, for the most important part: does it work? Yes. I have a spot in the room right next to my Wi-Fi 6 router that bounces between incredibly slow and no signal at all. Several rooms down, I have no problem, so I’m not sure what’s wrong in that one area.
During a good moment, at least for that spot, I had a link speed of 650 Mbps. After connecting to the repeater’s 5 GHz band, I had an 850 Mbps link speed. A few minutes later, my signal strength on my main network dropped to Fair and a speed of just 65 Mbps. The repeater’s network stayed steady at 850 Mbps.
Before, I couldn’t video chat in that room because the video was constantly freezing or turning grainy. Plus, the audio would completely disappear. Now, I have no issues.
I also love that you can press the WPS button on the side to manually adjust your network. It’s a bonus personalization option that many devices still don’t offer.
If you want something that’s highly compatible with most routers along with have a much wider overall range for your connection, this repeater delivers. I was thoroughly impressed with how much better, more stable, and longer my signal strength really was.
For slow or dead areas, it drastically improves your experience. I love that it works well through walls and was overall easy to set up.
