Why Would You Want to Repost Something on Instagram?
Instagram is filled with great content, and it’s only natural that you may want to show what you turn up to others. Apart from potentially boosting the appeal of your account, sharing other people’s content can have additional benefits, such as creating new interactions and building connections on the app.

By reposting, you can also help talented individuals build their presence online and attract new followers. When done right, sharing can be a great tool to acknowledge others and cultivate a healthy online community.
Instagram offers built-in tools that facilitate reposting various types of content on the app. However, in some situations, you may need to resort to a workaround to share the desired content in the format you want.
How to Repost a Post to Your Story on Instagram
You can easily reshare a regular post to your Story on Instagram. This should work with any post from a public profile.
Note: you can repost only from your mobile device and not your PC.
- Open the Instagram app on your phone.
- Find the photo in question.
- Press on the “Share” button (the paper plane) underneath the photo.

- Tap on the “Add post to your story” option.

- A Story will be created containing the image, with the original poster tagged underneath. Tap on their name to change the post’s style.

- Doing so will add the characteristic Instagram post borders.

- Press the “Your story” button to post.

How to Repost a Story in Which You Were Tagged on Instagram
You can easily repost other people’s Stories to your own Story if you were tagged in them. Note that the person who tagged you needs to have enabled the option to “Share Stories” via the app’s Privacy settings for you to do so.
- You should receive a notification on your phone when you’ve been tagged in a Story. You’ll also get an automatic Direct message from the person who tagged you letting you know you’ve been tagged. Tapping on the notification will take you directly to the message.
- In Direct, tap on the “Add to your story” button underneath the Story thumbnail. This button won’t be available if you’re viewing your Direct messages on PC.

- A Story will be automatically generated featuring a snapshot of the Story in question. It shows the original poster at the top and your tag.

- You can continue editing the Story, or if you’re satisfied, press “Your story” at the bottom to post.
How to Repost a Story in Which You Weren’t Tagged on Instagram
What if you want to repost a Story in which you weren’t tagged to your Stories? Unfortunately, there’s no native feature allowing you to do so. However, you can use a workaround to achieve the desired result.
- Go to the Story in question and take a screenshot of it. If you’re not familiar with the process, we show you how to take a screenshot on any Android phone. For iOS users, here’s how to screenshot your display.
- Once you have the screenshot, create a new Story using the image. We don’t recommend cropping out the original poster’s account name (it shows up at the top), since you may be accused of copying original content, but you can remove the fluff from the image, such as the Instagram logo and buttons at the top and bottom.

How to Repost a Reel to Your Story on Instagram
Unlike the case of Stories, you can repost almost any Reel to your Story by following the steps below.
- On your mobile device, navigate to a Reel.
- Press the “Share” button on the right.

- Tap “Add reel to your story.”

- The Story will be created automatically with the original poster tagged in the post.
Note: it’s possible to enlarge the image to hide the tag as well as the “Reels” icon.

- When you’re done, tap “Your story” to post it.
How to Repost a Reel to Your Instagram Profile Feed
If you want to repost the Reel to your profile feed, you’ll have to use a workaround. The two options are detailed below.
Record Your Screen
Android has a built-in option that allows users to record their screens, as does iOS. You can use these native features to record the Reel, then use a video-editing app, such as InShot (Android | iOS), to crop out the unwanted parts, like the Instagram logo and app buttons.

Once you’re done editing, you can repost the video as your own Reel. We recommended leaving the original poster’s tag in the video. If you’d like the video to be clean, we suggest tagging them in the description.

Use a Third-Party App
Alternatively, you can employ the help of a third-party app like Reposta (Android) or Reels Repost Reshare Story (iOS) to repost a Reel to your profile feed.
- Open a Reel on your mobile device.
- Press on the “More” option on the right.

- Tap on “Link” at the bottom to copy the Link.

- Open Reposta and tap the repost button.

- Wait a few seconds. The app will generate the repost for you.
- Choose whether you want to copy the Reel’s caption before you press “Repost.”

- You’re given the option to repost on your Profile Feed, Stories and Reels. Select your preferred variant.

- The app will remove any mention of the original poster, but once again, we recommend that you tag them somewhere, such as in the caption.

How to Repost a Regular Post to Your Instagram Profile Feed
If you’ve spotted a nice piece of art or a good-looking image and would like to have it adorn your own profile feed, it’s possible to do so.
You can either use the apps from the previous section or take a screenshot of the post, crop out the unimportant parts, then re-post it to your feed.
Don’t forget to tag the original poster in the caption. To make absolutely sure they are on board with you using their content, it would be safer to send them a Direct message and ask for express permission to use their stuff.
Third-Party Apps
Apart from the apps we’ve already mentioned in this post, there are others that facilitate the process of sharing on Instagram. Here are a few that are worthy of mention.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can view my reposts?
Reposts act like regular posts in the sense that they will be visible to everyone with access to view your Stories or profile feed. If your profile is set to private, for example, the reposts will be visible only to your followers. If your profile is public, the repost will be accessible to almost anyone. Alternatively, depending on your privacy settings, Stories you share may not be available every follower.
Can you hide reposts from certain followers?
In some cases, yes. If you’re reposting to a Story, then you can easily manage who sees a Story, as noted above. Once the Story is posted, click on the three dots in the lower-right corner and select “Story settings -> Hide story from.” If you’re reposting to your feed, then hiding the repost from some people won’t be possible. If you’re reposting to a regular post, then you won’t be able to hide that post from certain followers.
Do you need to follow an account to repost one of their Instagram Stories or Reels (if they tagged you in it?)
No, you don’t need to follow them to be able to repost. Note that this account needs to be set to public for you to repost its content.
How do I remove reposted content from Instagram?
If you want to remove a repost from your profile, proceed as you would with a regular post. For Stories, press on the “More” button and select “Delete” at the top. For reposts on your feed, again, you’ll need to find the “More” button, which is available in the upper-right corner of the post, and select “Delete” from the menu that pops up.
