No matter what corner of the world you live in, there were many, many news stories going on this year, especially in technology. There were fake news stories borne through tech communication, a debate over net neutrality, and the iPhone X release. We asked our writers, “What’s your favorite tech news story of 2017?”
Alex thinks “Wannacry was a fascinating and frightening glimpse of how damaging a widespread ransomware attack could be on a society so dependent on technology for its basic functionality.”
Kenneth’s favorite news story was when “LG made a breathtaking addition to their OLED lineup, the W7 wallpaper TV, whose thickness is the size of a credit card.” He notes that it’s so think it looks more like a window than a mounted TV. He’ll be getting one himself once it goes down in price.
Philbelieves “the “Xperia Touch will be something of a game changer” and that at some point in the future we’ll be laughing, looking back on fixed-size screens that have to be in one place all the time. He likes “the idea of anything being a screen.”
Miguel’s favorite tech news story of 2017 is “the announcement of a blockchain API by Mastercard,” noting it means faster payment processing with cross-border transactions.
Ryan believes it’s the “massive failure” of the iPhone X, with its “buggy software, ugly design, and shoddy implementation of facial unlocking,” that all contributed to a “lackluster product.” He also thinks it’s a “dumb name,” questioning whether it’s the letter X or the number 10, and if it’s the number, then he’s wondering what happened to the iPhone 9.
Being in the U.S., I think the tech story that had the biggest impact was the relatively new term, “fake news.” Even after an entire year, people still aren’t completely sure what it is. However, there’s no doubt that it’s impacting the state of the country and in many ways the world.
It seems everyone has a completely different answer to this question and even different reasons for calling something a favorite. What about you? What’s your favorite tech news story of 2017? Let us know in the comments section below.
