The latest iPhone is already upon us, and the decision to release the handset without a headphone jack has led to a renewed interest in wireless technology.
Everyone is talking about the new AirPod range of headphones, but they’re expensive (RRP $159.00) in comparison to others on the market. The full range of AirPod features will only work with other Apple products, so here’s a list with five cheaper options available right now.
1. Plantronics BackBeat 903+
The Plantronics BackBeat 903+ is a great option if you need a cheap wireless headset. The sound quality is better than you’d expect for the price, and it comes with a mic and touch controls on the headset itself.
It’ll take seven hours of straight use, while it’ll last for seven days on standby. It takes roughly three hours to charge fully. It has three adjustable levels for maximum comfort.
They retail for roughly $45 on Amazon.
2. Beats by Dre Urbeats In-Ear Headphones
Beats are known for being fairly expensive, but you could get a wired pair if you’re desperate for a premium brand. They retail for roughly $55 on Amazon, and they come with a RemoteTalk cable for communication. The buttons on the cable are compatible with Apple devices.
If you don’t have to go wireless, there are so many wired ones to choose from. They tend to be much cheaper in comparison, so make sure you really need a wireless pair.
3. Sony MDR-XB50BS Extra Bass In-Ear Headphones
The Sony offering is designed to be used on the move, so if you want to use headphones while exercising, these could be the right ones for you. They last for 8.5 hours before they need to be recharged, which is longer than most of the others on this list.
As with the others, they have a built-in microphone for hands-free phone calls. If your budget is a little higher, these are a great option at nearly half the RRP of AirPods.
They’re priced at $79.99 on Amazon.
4. Scosche SportclipAIR
If affordability is the main selling point for you, the Sportclip is one of the best on the market. The headphones are priced at roughly $70 on Amazon, and they’ll work with both Android and iOS devices.
The sound quality isn’t as good as you’ll find on the Plantronics pair, but they’re durable, and they’ll last for up to seven hours of continuous playback. The clip works with reassuring firmness, and they’re comfortable to wear for longer periods.
5. Panasonic WINGS
Noise isolation features are the USP for the Wings. They’ll work with any Bluetooth device, such as games consoles or Android phones. The lower end of the range will set you back roughly $70. They’re a capable choice compared to the new Apple headphones.
The clip design isn’t as popular as it used to be, as inner-ear headphones and bulky cans have stolen a march in recent years. Nonetheless, at least you’ll never lose them. They also have quick-charge capabilities, and fifteen minutes will get you just over an hour of extra usage.
Apple peripherals tend to be expensive. It’s obvious that they’d prefer if you went for a set of AirPods, but there are many options out there if you don’t want to break the bank.
AirPods do have a premium price point for a reason. The mic and noise-cancelling technology is second to none, and they’re useful during day-to-day use. Regardless, nearly every pair on this list is at least 50 percent cheaper. Look around before you decide on what to get.
It’s always going to be tough during technological transitions, and the move to wireless with the iPhone 7 means that wireless technology is only going to improve in the near-distant future. Even so, it might be worth waiting until the technology has been completely perfected. We’ll have a better idea when the iPhone 7 has been out for at least a few months.
