remote_desktop-logoMany of us are familiar with the functions of remote controls. They make watching television so much easier. Instead of getting up from your lazy boy couches, you can easily turn on the TV, change channels, and modify couches with just a tap of a button. That is why they made such a buzz when they first came out in the 1950s.

However, your TV is the not only thing that can be controlled remotely. Your computer can be controlled remotely too. Remote Desktop Connection is a feature in Windows operating system that allows you to control your computer from a different or isolated location. For example, you can control your computer at home while at work by using Remote Desktop Connection. In this guide, you will learn how to set up Remote Desktop Connection.

Enabling Remote Access

In order to set up Remote Desktop, you need to enable remote access. To do this, move the cursor to the bottom-left corner of the screen. Right-click and then select “System.” The next window will show you all of the basic specifications of your computer such as model number, CPU configuration, installed memory, etc.

remote_desktop_system

remote_destkop_system_settings

Move the cursor to the left pane and select “Remote Settings.” Go under the “Remote Desktop” section and select “Allow Remote Connections to This Computer.”

remote_desktop_allow

By default, Windows restriction remote connection only to other computers with network level authentication. While this option is more secured, it limits who can remotely access your computer.

Allowing Remote Desktop through Firewall:

By default, Windows Firewall blocks Remote Desktop. Therefore, in order for Remote Desktop to work, you need to enable through Windows Firewall. To do this, right click the bottom-left corner of the screen and select “Run.” Type “Firewall.cpl” in the text field and click “OK.’

remote_desktop_firewall_launch

This will launch Windows Firewall. Go to the left pane and click “Allow and App or Feature through Windows Firewall.”

remote_desktop_allow_app

You will then see a list of devices that are disabled or enabled through Windows Firewall.  Click “Change Settings.” Scroll down and check “Remote Desktop” to allow remote access.

remote_desktop_firewall_allow

Accessing a Computer Remotely

Once you have enabled remote access, you can remotely connect to a computer. To do this, you need to run the Remote Desktop Connection application. Right-click the bottom left corner of the screen and click “Search.” Type “Remote” in the search field and select and “Remote Desktop Connection.” This will open the Remote Desktop application.

remote_desktop_connect

Enter the IP address or name of the computer and click “Connect.”

The disadvantages of Remote Desktop

While Remote Desktop Connection is indeed a useful feature, its functions are limited. For example, Remote Desktop is restricted to your local network.  What is more, you cannot use Remote Desktop to connect to professional or higher versions of Windows. To get around this issue, you can remotely access a computer through a virtual private network (VPN). Programs such as LogMeIn, GotoMyPC, and TeamViewer also allow you to do this.

Do you find any use for the Remote Desktop feature in Windows? Or do you prefer a third party software like TeamViewer to do the job?

phishing_attackFishing can be a really enjoyable activity. But, getting fished, or phished for that matter, is not so fun. Yes, it is actually possible for people to get phished. Just like how fish that are fished are lured and killed, people who are phished are deceived and victimized. What exactly is phishing? Phishing is the act of deceiving (usually through email) people to reveal sensitive information such as passwords, bank account numbers, social security number, and credit card information.

With such sensitive information on the line, the stakes are obviously high. Sadly, as dangerous as they are, phishing attacks are common – very common. The 2012 RSA online fraud report indicates that there is an average of 33,000 phishing attacks each month; and these are just the ones reported. Because phishing attacks are so dangerous and prevalent, it is definitely important to protect yourself from them. This guide shows you how phishing attacks work and how to protect yourselves from them.

How Phishing Attacks Work

The main objective of phishing scammers is to steal information. To do this, hackers determine what information they need and how to retrieve it. They usually do this by sending you counterfeit or fake emails that seem to be from a legitimate company like Facebook, Bank of America, and LinkedIn. In a majority of cases, they tell you that you need to update your personal information for security purposes. Here is how one phishing email might look like:

facebook-malware-email

Exceptionally aggressive spammers may even tell you that your account will be permanently deleted if you don’t update your information. Such scare tactics may indeed move you to give out your personal information. This is why many people are victims of identity theft. Here is an example of a phishing attack process:

  1. You receive an email that seem to be from a legitimate company.
  2. You are told that you need to update personal information for security purposes.
  3. Concerned about safety, you click on the link that points to the counterfeit website.
  4. You land on a website that looks exactly like the real one.
  5. You enter your personal information and attempt to login.
  6. The hacker now has your information – you’ve just been phished. You are at the mercy of the “phisherman” or hacker. They can hijack your account, go on a spending spree, or selling your account information in the online black market.

As you can see, it only takes about a minute or less to get hacked. Fortunately, you can protect yourself. Follow these tips below.

How to Protect Yourself – 4 Simple Steps

1. Search for your name in the email. Most phishing attacks target a large group of people. As a result, the hackers don’t really care about individualized information – they just want to hack as many accounts as possible. Thus, before cautious when you see something like “Dear Valued Customer.”

2. Don’t click the link. Instead of clicking the link, hover the cursor over it. You will then a pop-up notification of the link address. If the link reveals that the website is not from the actual company, don’t click it.

phishing_pages

3. Take a close look at the URL. If you clicked on a link, you can still determine if the site is a fake. Take a look at the Web address field on top of your screen. In most cases, secured login pages like social networks and online banks start with “https” in the address field. If you don’t see it, do not sign in.

4. Search for grammatical errors. While hackers are good stealing and divulging information, their syntactical and spelling skills are often subpar. Therefore, if the email is unprofessional and marred with grammatical errors, don’t click the link.

5. Use anti-phishing software. These applications usually come with an Internet security suite. They detect phishing and websites and prevent you from divulging information.

Are You Just too Smart to Be Phished?

Some people may reason that they are too computer savvy or just too smart to be phished. Don’t deceive yourself! Many big corporations have been phishing attacks. You have no doubt seen and heard of successful hack attacks launched at social networking and even government sites.

One type of phishing attack that is particularly dangerous is spear phishing. Unlike most phishing attacks, spear phishing focuses on a specific person, company, group, or corporation. This means that the hacker can launch more precise attacks. For example, they can use your actual name instead of “Dear valued customer.” Accept the fact that phishing is a serious threat and strive to follow the advice mentioned above to safeguard your information.

The Complete Guide to Avoid Scams on Craigslisthttp://www.maketecheasier.com/the-complete-guide-to-avoid-scams-on-craigslist/2013/05/01 http://www.maketecheasier.com/the-complete-guide-to-avoid-scams-on-craigslist/2013/05/01#comments Wed, 01 May 2013 23:25:53 +0000 Juderson Jean-Baptiste http://www.maketecheasier.com/?p=71450 Craigslist is a popular place for people to buy and sell stuff. It is also a good hangout for fraudster to scam the user. This guide will teach you how to avoid scams on Craigslist.

The post The Complete Guide to Avoid Scams on Craigslist appeared first on Make Tech Easier.

]]>
The rise of the Internet has greatly revolutionized the economy. Instead of going out to purchase goods from a store, you can easily buy something with just a click of a button. Sadly though, this convenience comes at a sobering price – increasing risk of online scam. Every year, thousands of people are scammed. A report from the 2012 JP Morgan Online Fraud report suggests that about $3.4 billion in online revenue were lost due to fraud [1].

Craigslist_scamLaunched in 1995, a website known as Craigslist appeared to be an ideal solution to this problem. Craigslist combined the convenience of the Internet with the assurance of upfront face-to-face transactions. Craigslist allows users to buy and sell goods. Users can then set appointments with others to buy or sell a product. While Craigslist’s model does seem ideal, it itself is rife with problems – serious problems! In this guide, you will learn how to use Craigslist safely and effectively.

Keep Transactions Local and Upfront

This is one of the most important principles when using Craigslist – whether you are a buyer or seller. If you do this, you will positively avoid most scams fraudsters can hurl at you. Fraudsters on Craigslist are clever; they use sly tactics to rob your money. The key methods they use to do this are money transfer services – in the form of paychecks, MoneyGram, PayPal, or Western Union.

Key Point: Transactions that involve long-distance and money transfer services are almost always scams.

When you are buying a product, fraudsters claim that they will send you the product if you send your money to them through transfers. If you are selling products, the fake buyers often claim that they will send you the money after you ship the item to them.

Online Money

The fraudsters try their utmost to sound as convincing as possible. If you are buying a product, they’ll significantly reduce the price of the item, because they need to “sell it right away.” Some of them make bogus claims that these products are from a foreclosed home or a divorced conjugal partner. If you are selling a product, they’ll often tell you that they “desperately” need the product. They will even claim to pay for shipping and offer a higher price than what you originally asked for.

In both of those cases, the fraudsters will ask you to give them your PayPal, MoneyGram, or Western Union information to complete the transaction. Don’t ever do this! They will never send you the money if you sold something to them, and they will never send you the item if you purchased something from them.

What if the Person is not a Fraudster? How Would You Know?

Albeit unlikely, it is possible that it is a normal and well-intentioned person that is making a transaction with you. How would you know? One way to know is by interrogating the person – yes – aggressively questioning him. If he claims that he is very far away and needs money transfer, sternly tell him that you already know about this scam. In most cases, scammers will shy away if they see this. If a person from a distant location is buying  something from you, ask a question like this: “if you want this so bad, why don’t you buy it from eBay or Amazon?” Next, show them a link to the product. If they don’t reply, they were positively a scammer. If they were real buyers, they would thank you for referring them there.

How to Avoid Getting Attacked and Killed

No product and no amount of money is more precious than your life! Sadly, many people have been murdered due to fraudsters and heinous individuals on Craigslist. Fortunately, you can prevent this as well. You can do this by insisting on transacting on public locations and by threatening to get or actually getting the police involved.

If you are concerned about your security, insist on meeting at a public location like a store, supermarket, or restaurant. Don’t ever make an appointment at your home or the person’s home. If you meet with the person at your home, they now know where you live. If you lie and meet with the person at a place that you claim to live, you are putting the people residing at this address in jeopardy. That is why it is best to meet at a public location.

IF

However, even meeting at a public location is not completely safe. The person can meet you behind the store and attack you or cleverly wait until no one is watching to launch an attack. If you are still concerned about your safety, tell the person that you have informed the police of this transaction. If that person is an aggressor, he will back way as soon as he hears that the police is involved. Whether you think it is best to trick the person in thinking that police is involved or actually contacting the police is up to you.

Is Craigslist a Waste of Your Time?

No, Craigslist is not a waste of your time. You can find good deals and have success promoting your business and selling products there. You just have to be determined to follow the recommended guidelines.

RescuetimeThe Internet is no doubt one of the greatest technological innovations in history. It allows you to do research, entertain yourself, and communicate with others in other parts of the world. However, the problem is that the Internet is just too useful at times. Since the Web is fraught with information and activities, you can easily find yourself distracted.

For instance, if you are trying to write an essay, you may find yourself making frivolous tweets on Twitter or spending countless time chatting with your friends on Facebook. I myself have to truly focus while writing this. What if there is a way you can improve your productivity on the Web without having to rely on shear willpower alone? – A Web app known as RescueTime may be an ideal solution to your problem.

What is RescueTime and How Does it Work?

As its name implies, the primary objective of this Web app is to help you “rescue” valuable time from the plethora of distractions on the Internet. It does this by monitoring the amount time you spend on specific websites. It also categorizes the sites you visit. RescueTime allows you select the categories that you consider to be distracting and the ones that you think are productive. This gives you an overview of your daily activities on the Web. This also allows you to accurately see how much time you waste on websites that are distracting.

How to Use RescueTime:

RescueTime is relatively easy to use. The app does most of the functions by itself. All you have to do is install it, select your preferences, and monitor your productivity on the Web.

Once you have downloaded the app, you will see the icon on the top-right side of the screen. To start setting up RescueTime, move the cursor to the top-right corner of the window and then click the “RescueTime” icon.

Rescuetime_icon

Type your email inside the “Your Email Address” box and then click “Sign Up.” It will then ask you to select a password and confirm your email address. Once you have done all of this, you will have a RescueTime account.

rescuetime_email

After creating an account, RescueTime will walk you through the setup. The first things you will see are a red and green column. You can select the categories you consider distracting from the red column and the ones you consider productive from the green column. Select the categories of your preference and proceed.

rescuetime_categories

You can narrow down the specifications further by allowing it to track all sites or only specific sites.

rescuetime_specific-sites

You will be asked some additional questions. Answer the questions and then click “I’m Done.”  Now you are ready to monitor your productivity.

rescuetime_complete

It will take about a week for RescueTime to collect information to give you an accurate overview. However, it will always tell you whether a site is distracting or not. To find out if a site is distracting or not, simply click the “RescueTime” icon from the top-right corner of the screen. Because a site like MakeTechEasier matches my preferences, it is rightfully labeled as very productive.

Does RescueTime Really Improve Your Web Productivity?

RescueTime can certainly help improve your productivity on the Web. It allows you to see just how much time you waste browsing through unnecessary websites. By reviewing your browsing habits, you will be able to use your time more productively. In the end, it is only up to improve your productivity.

rescuetime_stats

RescueTime will not automatically make you more productive. You must acknowledge your negative browsing habits and cultivate a need to change them. RescueTime is not perfect. It only gives you a general idea of your browsing habits. You will have to discern how to use the data to ameliorate your browsing habits.

What is Page Eraser Really?

As its name implies, Page Eraser is an application that allows you to remove various objects from a web page. It removes a variety of objects such as images, text, and sidebars. The removal of superfluous objects allows you navigate your favorite websites with much more convenience. Since the pages have fewer objects, they will load much faster.

How to Use Page Eraser

Page Eraser is a relatively simple app to use. Once you have installed Page Eraser, you will see its icon on the top-right side of the screen near the address bar. To use it, simply click the “Page Eraser” icon.

Image-DictionaryThe Internet is rife with information. You can pretty much find information about almost anything on the Web. However, not all information on the web is comprehensible. For example, the language of the webpage you are viewing may be written in a language that you do not understand. You may also have difficulty understanding certain jargon or terminologies. What if you could view an image or illustration of certain text on a webpage? This is where Image Dictionary steps in. This app allows you to look up an image for any highlighted word on a webpage. This makes it more convenient understand certain words that you are not familiar with.

How Image Dictionary Works:

Google, Bing, yahoo, and other search engines allow you find related images through your typed queries. However, Image Dictionary does more—it saves you time by letting you find related images without leaving the webpage. The process of opening a new tab, accessing a search engine, typing the keyword, and then selecting the appropriate can be quite tedious. In contrast, Image Dictionary allows you to see an illustration of selected text with just a few clicks.

Using Image Dictionary:

Image Dictionary is pretty straightforward. Once the app is installed, you will be able to use it right way. There are two ways to use Image Dictionary.

Method 1:

Highlight and right-click a word on a webpage, and then click “Image Dictionary.” It will then display an image that matches the highlighted text.

Image-Dictionary_Highlighted-text

Method 2:

Hold the “Alt” key and double-click any word on the page. You will then see a related image. This is the related image that was displayed for the word “Journalist.”

Image-dictionary-related-image

Below each image, there is a link to the Wikipedia article and the image itself. Viewing the article may help you find the meaning of the word by analyzing the context.

Image-dictionary-view-article

Limits of Image Dictionary:

Before using Image Dictionary, you need to be aware of its limits. All the images it displays are only from Wikipedia. Since it only has one source of retrieving images, its database is quite limited. It cannot always find an image that matches the highlighted text. In addition to having a limited database, some words have more than one meaning.

For example the word “course” may mean a class or route. The meaning also depends on the context. “Course” has an entirely different meaning when it is used in a sentence that begins with “of course.” Because of all of the ambiguities and its limited database, Image Dictionary is incapable of always finding related images. It is good at finding images for words such as car, computer, smartphone, iPad, etc. However, it has a harder time displaying related images for abstract words.

Is Image Dictionary Worth Your Time?

Image Dictionary is worth a try if you frequently use Wikipedia. It will definitely help you find related images quickly. Nevertheless, you should be careful of abstract words and ideas. They can generate irrelevant images.

accupix-mainA lot of webmasters are adamant about their website’s color quality and arrangement. However, finding the right colors for your website is not always easy; it is a cumbersome process of trial and error. In some cases, the main colors of your website may not match certain objects and elements. What if you could somehow harmonize the colors of all the different features on your website? This is where Accupix comes in.

Accupix is a simple extension for Google Chrome that lets you detect and copy the color code of any object on your page.

Key Features of Accupix:

  • Picks Color from Any Webpage
  • Easy-to-use Shortcuts
  • Improves Color Schemes
  • Facilitates Web Editing

Are Color Arrangements Really That Important?

It doesn’t take a lot of research to realize that colors play a crucial role in just about every aspect of life. In the commercial sector, companies often denote the quality of their products with colors. A good example of this is the editions of Microsoft Windows 7 (see the image below).

Notice that the most expensive edition has the most vibrant color – black. Colors are especially important for webmasters that generate revenue from contextual advertisements. To generate optimal revenue, it is generally best for the ads to match the color themes of the website. Harmonizing those colors may be time-consuming if you are not really familiar with HTML and CSS. Fortunately, accupix may be an ideal for solution for webmasters that are dealing this problem.

Using Accupix:

Accupix is a convenient app to use. You will literally know how to use it the moment you install it. There are two ways to access accupix. The first method is by moving the cursor to the top-right corner of the window and clicking the “Color Picker” icon.

Useful Shortcuts:

  • Use Control Mouse (Scroll) Up to Zoom in toward the webpage.
  • Use Control Mouse (Scroll) Down to Zoom out away from the webpage.
  • Use the Arrows in the Keyboard to match the pixels with precision.
  • Press Enter to Pick the Pixels.
  • Press Escape (Esc) to exit the picker.

Final Thoughts:

As its names implies, Accupix allows you to accurately copy the color of any object on a webpage. The app works quite well. You will likely have success tweaking the colors of your website by using it. It is an ideal alternative of Eye Dropper—which is another extension that offers similar features. Albeit it is not as popular as Eye Dropper, it does seem to be slightly easier to use.

KeepLastTab_IconWhile it is definitely one of the fastest Web browsers out there, Google Chrome has its own problems that may make you want to think twice about having it as your default browser. For example when you close the last tab, the browser automatically shuts down. Google probably does this to ameliorate user experience, but this feature may be doing the exact opposite. That is because you may at times accidentally close the last tab.

Closing the Last Tab – A Serious Mistake?

When foraging through the web for relevant information, users often have a lot of tabs open. When the user decides to close all of the unused tabs, they may inadvertently close the last tab. This is a crushing blow if you are using private browsing or incognito mode. When you use incognito mode, the browsing history is not stored. If the last tab contained a webpage with important information, you will not be able to return to that web page by accessing your browsing history. If you do not remember the webpage of the last tab, you will have to search for it over again—which hinders your user experience. Until Google decides to fix this problem by removing this feature, you will have to be careful to not accidentally close the last tab.

KeepLastTab — An Ideal Solution?

Fortunately, KeepLastTab, a Chrome extension that may help you fix this problem. The primary function of this extension is to prevent the browser from shutting down when you close the last tab – a simple, yet important feature.

This extension is relatively simple to use. After downloading it from the Chrome Web store, it will start to work immediately. However, you can tweak it further to make it match your preferences.

To do this, move the cursor to the top-right corner of the window and click the “Customize” (wrench) icon.

Chrome_Tools

Point the cursor to “Tools” and select “Extensions.”

Chrome_Extensions

You will see the application in the extension list. If you do not see, it means that you did not install it properly. You will also notice that you have the option to allow in incognito or private browsing mode. To disable it, simply uncheck the “Enable” box from the right side of the window. To allow it in private browsing or incognito mode, check the “Allow Incognito Mode” box.

Chrome_Extension_Settings

Now each time you close attempt to close the last tab, a new one will automatically open.

Final Thoughts

While this app does what it promises, it has some loopholes that you need to be aware of. When you use this app, there will always be two tabs opened. Whenever you close one of the last two tabs, a new blank tab will be opened. This may be a problem for those who abhor even the most picayune forms of clutter. By dragging out one of the last two tabs to create a new one, you will be left with one tab open. However, Chrome will shut down if you close it. As long as you don’t mind always having at least two tabs opened, this app is an ideal solution to your problem.
