How to Transfer Contacts from Android Phone

Now let’s try to export contacts from your Android device to iPhone. Assuming that you are not using Google to sync your contacts (but really, you should):

Step 1: Mount your device to your computer and go to “Contacts” in your Android phone, and in the settings look for “Export to SD Card“.

Step 2: All of the existing contacts contained in “My Contacts List” will be exported to “00001.vcf” file in your SD card.

Step 3: Now, on your computer, try to open your Gmail account and go to “Settings” then “Import“. Browse and locate ’00001.vcf’ from your SD card. When it’s done you are ready to proceed to the next step.

Step 4: If you have previously setup Gmail in your iPhone it would be a lot easier. Go to “Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars” and toggle Contacts switch to ON.

Now if you are already using Google to manage your contact, you can skip to Step 4 directly.

Transferring Data from Another iPhone

Some of you may be asking how to transfer data from an old iPhone to a newer one, just follow the steps below.

Step 1: Dock your old iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes. Usually, iTunes will automatically sync a few seconds after you launch it given that your iPhone is properly connected to your computer. If iTunes fails to sync automatically, click on the “Sync” button located on the lower-right corner of iTunes. Or, you can right-click on your iPhone under Devices and click “Back Up“.

It may take a little while for iTunes to complete the sync. Basically, this process will backup everything from your old iPhone.

Step 2: Unplug your old iPhone and dock the new one. If you have not registered your new iPhone yet, you will be asked to do so.

Step 3: After which, iTunes will ask you to either set up a new iPhone or restore from backup; select “Restore from the backup of” and choose the one you just made, click “Continue” button to proceed with the restoration.

Step 4: Your iPhone will reboot automatically if restoration is done. Once it comes back on, iTunes will automatically detect it and start syncing the data from your old iPhone.

Step 5: This time, it may take several minutes to complete depending on how many apps you have been using in your old iPhone. Let iTunes finish everything for you. When it is complete, your new iPhone will have the same settings and contain the same data and apps.

This process usually transfers almost all data from your old iPhone to the new one including cameral roll photos, contacts, settings and apps as backup to iTunes which you can get access to anytime you like.

I was able to get hold of a new Verizon iPhone 4 which comes with a built-in app (Personal Hotspot) you can use to share your internet connection. Basically, Personal Hotspot will turn your iPhone into a router that will share your iPhone’s internet connection with your other devices within range. With this app, it is almost painless to tether as you don’t have to install new apps nor jailbreak your iPhone. Here’s how you do it:

Step 1: Launch “Settings” app from your Springboard or Home Screen.

Step 2: Now look for “Personal Hotspot” which is visible enough for you to miss. Tap on that to open its settings pane.

This is the feature you can never find in iPhone 4 that runs on iOS 4.2 and lower.

Step 3: You simply have to toggle on Personal Hotspot switch to ON. If it is previously disabled, a window pops up asking you if you want to “Turn on Bluetooth” or “Wi-Fi and USB Only“.

Step 4: You will then be able to see the default password. If you want to change it for security purposes, tap on it and you will be brought to a new pane where you can easily change it. Just don’t forget to tap on “Done” button after.

Step 5: That’s it. Your iPhone will start transmitting signal that your other devices can easily connect to. One more thing, you will be able to know how many devices are connected to your iPhone by looking at the blue bar at the top of your screen; it indicates the number of devices connected.

How to Connect your Computers

With Personal Hotspot, you can easily create a smaller Wi-Fi hotspot in your home. Connecting PC/laptop is as easy as connecting to a wireless hotspot available in cafes, malls and almost other public places.

Step 1: You will be able to find a list of network services in your computer, choose iPhone.

Step 2: Enter the default password if you haven’t changed it yet. If you did, then use the one set in your iPhone.

How to Connect Using Bluetooth

Step 1: You must pair your iPhone and your computer first before you can use Bluetooth to connect to your Wi-Fi.

Step 2: When you select iPhone from Bluetooth menu, a passcode will be sent to your iPhone. It is the same passcode that you can see in your computer.

Step 3: After a few seconds, you will be connected to a hotspot.

Connecting other devices to your personal hotspot is made easy. However, you should know that Verizon charges you $20 to have 2GB bandwidth per month. It is not cheap, but it is not expensive either if you use it all the time.

Adding an Exchange Account Using a Configuration Profile

Perhaps, the easiest way to set up Exchange ActiveSync on your iPad or iPhone is by creating a payload in a configuration profile that you will use to load into your device. You can apply the configuration profile by using either a USB cable with the help of iPhone Configuration Utility or by distributing it to other users, for example, sending it via your email account which is already configured on the iPhone or by posting it to your website for everyone to access.

Creating an Exchange ActiveSync Payload for a Configuration Profile

You can follow these steps to create an Exchange ActiveSync payload that you can load into your iPhone or iPad.

Step 1: Launch “iPhone Configuration Utility” from the Dock or the Utilities folder on your Mac or from the Start Menu on Windows.

Step 2: Click the ‘Configuration Profiles‘ item in the Source list to display the list of all configuration profiles.

Step 3: You may choose and click the profile that you want to add the Exchange ActiveSync payload.

Step 4: In the Payloads list, click on the ‘Exchange ActiveSync‘ item to open the ‘Configure Exchange ActiveSync‘ pane.

Step 5: Now, click on the ‘Configure‘ button to display ‘Exchange ActiveSync‘ pane.

Now, let’s try to have a closer look on each field so that you’ll be able to understand it better.

Account Name - enter a descriptive name that best describes the account.

Exchange ActiveSync Host – usually, hostname is used in this field but you can also use the IP address of the Exchange server.

Use SSL – you can check this box to make the communications with Secure Sockets Layer more secure. This is recommended but not required.

Domain & User text boxes – you can leave these fields blank as the iPhone or iPad will prompt the user to enter the information during the installation of profile in the device. However, if you are setting up a specific account then enter the appropriate information.

Email Address & Password - you can leave these fields blank so that each user has to enter his/her address and password every time.

Step 6: To add a certificate to securely identify the user, click on the [+] button just beneath ‘Authentication Credential‘ text box. This will display the ‘Windows Security‘ dialog box wherein you can choose an identity you can use. Click on ‘OK‘ button if you have selected a certificate.

After creating an Exchange ActiveSync profile, you can deploy it to your devices, i.e. iPhone and iPad.

Step 7: Click on the device you want the profile deployed located in the left pane. Select on the profile and simply click on ‘Install‘ button.

Step 8: You will also be prompted by your iPhone about the profile installation together with other information that go with the profile. Tap on ‘Install‘ button to proceed, and tap ‘Done‘ when finished.

As far as installation of configuration profile is concerned, that’s how you do it.

Setting Up a Connection to an Exchange Server Manually

As much as others find it easier to use configuration profiles to setup Exchange ActiveSync, there will be others who prefer to set things up through their iPhone. Now, let’s try to quickly go through the steps on how to manually setup Exchange Server through your iPhone.

Step 1: Launch ‘Settings‘ app from the Springboard and choose ‘Mail, Contacts, Calendars‘.

Step 2: Tap on ‘Add Account‘, then choose ‘Microsoft Exchange‘.

Step 3: On the next screen, you will be prompted to enter your Email, Domain (optional), Username, Password, and Description. If you don’t know much about these information, you can ask your company’s Exchange Server administrator.

Step 4: Your iPhone will automatically locate and authenticate the Exchange settings with the use of Microsoft’s Autodiscovery service. Should it fails to locate the server, you will be brought to the same window with ‘Server‘ field added to the previous fields. And therein, you have to enter the complete address of your Exchange server; again, you can ask your server administrators for it.

Once your iPhone has successfully made a connection with your company’s Exchange server, you will be prompted to change your device’s passcode to match with all the policies set on Exchange server.

That’s it! You must be able to Send, Receive and Read your emails from your iPhone/iPad. There shouldn’t be any problem connecting your iDevices with your company’s Exchange server as long as you are allowed to. And if that’s the case, you or other employees should have been given the server settings and other information you need to connect, or you will be advised that you can ask your system administrators for it.

Preventing Accidental In-App Purchases

Since the release of iOS 3.0 up to the latest iOS, iPhone, iPad and iPod owners would be able to purchases subscriptions or any extra contents within an application; this is what in-app purchase means. More often, there are built-in links within an app and these are the most common media to where these purchases happen. Most of the times, we think clicking on those links would not cost a dime and most of the times we are wrong. Step 1: Launch the ‘Settings‘ app and tap on ‘General‘.

Step 2: Now, look for ‘Restrictions‘ and tap on it to open. If you have set up your passcode previously, you will be asked to enter your 4-digit code.

Step 3: Try to scroll down a bit and look for a section ‘Allowed Content‘. From there you will be able to find ‘In-App Purchases‘, just simply turn it OFF.

That’s simply it. Honestly, most of iPhone users don’t know much about in-app purchases, they will be able to learn they’re present in their iPhones only when they receive a receipt email about the transaction. Moreover, if you have kids at home who keep on playing with your phone, it is a good reason to turn it off for good. Kids are just too smart these days.

How to Block Your Caller ID When Calling Someone

Telephone companies anywhere in the world follow standards for their businesses. One of the common denominators of these companies is the caller ID. Whenever you are calling someone from your phone, your number appears in the phone of the other party even before the call is answered.

There are two ways you can block your caller ID, first, by using special country code every time you make a call (temporary), and by turning off ‘Show My Caller ID’ in your iPhone.

Blocking Caller ID by Special Code

Supposing you are calling the number 212-123-1234 (just an example), here’s what you should do;

Step 1: Learn the special code for your country. For example, if you are in Australia you use 1831, or *67 if you are in the US. You can check out Wikipedia for these codes.

Step 2: If you know the special code to use, dial it before dialing the phone number of someone you are calling to. For example, dial 1831 (Australia) before dialing 212-123-1234. So, the number to appear in your screen would be 1831-212-123-1234.

The person you are calling to would not be able to see your number, instead he/she would see a “Blocked” call.

Block Caller ID from iPhone Settings

The other way to block your caller ID is to turn ‘Show My Caller ID‘ off from your iPhone settings. Here’s how you do it;

Step 1: Launch ‘Settings‘ app and look for ‘Phone‘.

Step 2: Inside Phone settings, look for ‘Show My Caller ID‘ and tap on it to open.

Step 3: Now, you are ready to turn it off without a sweat. And that’s it.

The other party would be able to see ‘Blocked‘ on his/her screen.

Save Phone Extension for Easily Dial

I believe everybody has tried calling any customer support hotlines and experienced the inconvenience of dialing corresponding numbers just to get a representative on the line. Fortunately, there is a way to skip all that using your iPhone.

Supposing you have a friend you want to call with a phone number 71234567 (just an example), local 7654. You can either dial the extension every time you call or you can save it a dial your friend in just a click of your keypad.

Saving a Phone Number with Extension

Step 1: Key in the real phone number (in this case, it’s 71234567) then press “+*#” button to display the “pause” button.

Step 2: Press on “pause” button. This will add a space and a comma after the phone number you just entered. Virtually, it means that there will be a friendly pause after you’ve dialed the number.

Step 3: Now, you are ready to key the local extension, and that’s it. You can save the phone number in that format.

Saving a Customer Support Hotline

Now, when it comes to support hotlines, you have to follow the same principle in saving the number. For example, the hotline is 2222 0000 and you have to dial 1,2,3 just to get the representative to help you.

Step 1: Key in the hotline number (for example, 2222 0000) and press “+*#” button.

Step 2: Now, press “pause” button to put in a space and a comma.

Step 3: You have to key in the sequence of numbers that you have to press just to get to the correct department. But you have to put a pause in between those numbers.

So, what your iPhone will do is to dial the hotline number then pause for a while and dial the sequence of numbers with friendly pauses in between.

Create Cool iPhone HTML Email Signature

Email signatures are the best way to have your own personal brand. Signatures are often the one that make an impact to the recipients of your emails. Thus, if you think an email signature cannot do anything good for you, you’re wrong. Here is how to make professional HTML email signature;

Step 1: Point your browser to http://www.coolgeex.com/iPhoneSign/ and fill up fields as much information you want to appear at the end of your emails.

Step 2: If you have entered the information you want to appear with your emails, you may click on ‘Create Signature‘ button below. Make sure you have entered a Pin Number, you will be using it to authenticate your access later.

Step 3: Once you click on ‘Create Signature‘ you will be given a URL to access. To be able to use the signature you just created, you have to use the given URL every time you send email from your iPhone. Thus, it would be better to bookmark it or create a shortcut to it so that you can access the page without a hassle.

Step 4: Launch Safari from your iPhone and point it to the given URL. You will then be asked for the Pin Number you entered earlier; enter it and click on ‘Go‘ thereafter.

Step 5: You can now create an email with your cool, customized signature. If you want to send emails with your signature, you just have to launch the shortcut you created in step 3. That’s it.

There is a workaround I knew in making some iPhone apps iPad-compatible, however, you must remember that not all apps may run correctly with this method. I have used Fugu for several months with this purpose and I never encountered any problem.

Fugu Overview

Basically, Fugu is the graphical representation of Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) command line. SFTP works like File Transfer Protocol (FTP) only that the entire session is encrypted and it is impossible for third party to intercept that data being sent (especially password) because all of which do not have clear-text format. For more information about Fugu, you may visit its official website.

Pre-Requisites

- before you can do this tutorial, you should jailbreak your iPad.

- install OpenSSH through Cydia.

- download Fugu here.

Here’s the Workaround…

Actually, this tutorial is pretty simple and straightforward that you wouldn’t even find it difficult. However, if you are new to using iPhone or iPad, there’ll may be things you would find difficult to understand.

Step One: Make sure you connect your iPad to the same network where your computer is connected; launch Fugu if everything is set and ready.

Step Two: You will then be asked to enter information to the fields provided. For the Connect To field, enter your iPad’s IP address; for Username, enter the default which is root. You may click on ‘Connect‘ button to continue.

Step Three: You will be prompted for the password. If you haven’t changed the default password yet, you can use alpine, then click ‘Authenticate‘ to proceed.

Step Four: Now, we will go to applications folder. Click on ‘Go To‘ button at the top. Then key in /var/mobile/Applications, but make sure that ‘Remotely‘ option is selected before you click on the ‘Go‘ button. This will bring us to the directory where application files are saved.

Step Five: A list of folders or directories will be presented to you with a bunch of numbers. Unfortunately, it would be difficult to determine the right app you are looking for since the directories are named NOT bearing their own names or brands. The best thing you can do is to know the ‘Date Modified’ of the application you are looking for.

Step Six: If you already knew the folder you are up to based on its modified date, just double-click on it to enter the directory. Once inside, you’ll notice there is another folder which bears the name of the app. In this example, we will use BeejiveIM app since it is one of the applications where this guide is applicable to. Enter into the app’s directory.

Step Seven: Look for info.plist and copy it to your computer, or you can just drag it from the right pane to the left.

Step Eight: Control-click or Right-click on file you just copied and select ‘Open‘ from the menu. Doing so will let Property List Editor open the file for editing. Now click on ‘Add Child‘ button from the toolbar; name the new child as UIDeviceFamily.

Step Nine: Now Right-click on UIDeviceFamily, select ‘Value Type‘ then ‘Array‘ from the menu.

Step Ten: There is a little arrow beside UIDeviceFamily (left side), just click on it to reveal child under it. After which, add two items by clicking ‘Add Child‘ twice, this will add items 0 and 1, and set the values 1 and 2, respectively.

Step Eleven: After doing the above step, just ‘Save‘ it normally. Now, you are ready to overwrite info.plist using Fugu.

Basically, you can do the steps 8 to 10 without copying info.plist to your computer for editing. However, to make it safer for your app, it would be better to back the data up before editing; doing so will make it easier for you to retract all the changes you’ve should anything crazy happen.

Now, you can just respring your iPad or reboot it. The next time you’ll launch that specific iPhone app (for this post it’s BeejiveIM) through your iPad, it should work. Don’t hesitate to leave questions or comment if you have any.

With iMovie, you can create better clips to show to your friends online or via MMS. Currently, it is offered in iTunes for $4.99. This is a very low price for a precious app that you can use to satisfy your artistic taste of a good customized movie clip.

How to Edit Video/Movie Clips

Step One: Launch iMovie from your Springboard and tap the ‘+’ button as instructed.

Step Two: Select the theme which best suits the movie you will be editing. Should you also want to use the theme’s music, you just have to toggle the button from OFF to ON. Of course, do not forget to tap on “Done” button thereafter.

iMovie offers five built-in themes you can choose from, namely; Bright, Modern, News, Playful and Travel.

Step Three: You will be brought to a screen wherein you have to choose whether to import previously saved media or to record from your iPhone’s cam.

Usually, I record video using cameras with high caliber lenses; I just don’t like the resolution of iPhone’s camera. Thus, I usually import videos to my iPhone rather than to record.

Step Four: When you import some videos to your iPhone, you will be able to choose from the thumbnails the video you want included in the timeline. The video clips that you put in the timeline are the ones that will be shown in your movie.

Step Five: Once you have added the clips to the timeline, you can edit them the way you want. You can move the clips forward or backward with a single swipe. To set the Title Style, Location or turn the audio off, you just have to double tap on the clip to open Clip Settings; you can even delete it from there.

After you’ve set everything, just tap on “Done” to proceed.

Step Six: Now, if you want to import another clip to add to your timeline, you can set the transition in between those clips the way you want it. Basically, the transition is the filler that connects the one clip to the other in your timeline. Double tap on the transition button to choose the type you want to use in between your clips.

There are four options you can choose from;

• None – if you choose this option, there will be a blank transition button between your clips; it indicates that there is not transition effects.
• Cross Dissolve – as what the name describes.
• Theme – it sets the kind of transition the matches the kind of theme you selected before you began editing the project.
• Duration – it will set specific time the next clip shows in seconds.

Step Seven: If you think the movie clip you are making is good enough and want to share it with your friends, you just have to export your customized movie. Just tap on “Project View” button and you will be able to see the export button from there. There are also three export options you can choose from; Medium (360p), Large (540p), and HD (720p).

Actually, the steps presented in this guide are so basic. You can do hundreds of things with iMovie iPhone app. All you have to do is to make yourself acquainted with the interface and functions of all buttons and you can create professional video clips out of your iPhone.

While there are applications offered at a low price, most of them are offered for free. Even though you can access those free apps anytime you like, it will take much of your time reinstalling all of them should your iPhone fails.

The point is, why should you spend a day of two trying to remember and figure out what the apps you previously used when you can have them back in few clicks?

I believe that most of us agree that backing up our iPhone data is one of the most important things we cannot afford to neglect.

I have written an article on how to manually back up your iPhone apps but a lot of people cannot seem to follow as it is a bit complicated especially for a new users. So, this article will walk you through on how to back up your Cydia apps using PkgBackup.

PkgBackup Overview

This iPhone app is offered at Cydia for $3.99. The price is just low enough considering that it offers a very good backup service for your apps. It is developed by Jibril Gueye of Pragmatix Consulting and sponsored by Big Boss.

PkgBackup Installation

The installation is straightforward and simple. It’s just like you are installing any other apps from Cydia only that you have to purchase this package before you do. I will perform a step-by-step installation so that new iPhone users may find it even easier.

Step One: Launch Cydia and tap on “Sections” tab located below your screen.

Step Two: Found inside Sections is the “Utilities” option, tap on it to open.

Step Three: There will be a list of packages under Utilities. Try to search for PkgBackup, and tap on it to open the package.

Step Four: As mentioned earlier, you have to purchase this package to continue using it. You can find a “Purchase” button at the top-right corner of the screen. Tap on it to continue with the purchase; currently, it is offered $3.99.

Step Five: After the purchase, the “Install” button appears in the location where you found “Purchase” button.

Step Six: And of course, every installation needs confirmation, so just tap on “Confirm” button to proceed with the process.

Step Seven: Now tap on “Return to Cydia” button.

Backing Up Your Cydia Applications

After you’re done installing PkgBackup, you will be able to see its icon from your Springboard. If you are ready, you can follow these steps to back you app packages up.

Step One: Launch PkgBackup from your Springboard.

Step Two: Once it’s opened it will automatically scan and detect all of the packages installed in your iPhone. It may take a little while depending on the number of apps installed.

You may tap on the small arrow to view the list of all active packages in your iPhone.

You can choose specific apps that you don’t want to include in the backup process from the list.

Upon choosing a specific app, you can toggle the ON/OFF button.

Step Three: If you are ready to proceed with the backup, you can go back to PkgBackup main screen and simply tap on “Backup” button. Moreover, should you want to keep your layout, toggle Include Layout button to ON. The backup process may also take a little while to complete depending on the number of packages installed in your iPhone.

Step Four: When the backup process is completed, you will be prompted with a reminder to sync with iTunes; you must do as advised. Tap on “OK” button and sync your iPhone with iTunes. Make sure that backup is completely performed during the syncing process as this is the only key you can restore your previous packages.

So far, that’s how backup is performed using PKGBackup. Supposing you have restored or upgraded your firmware and all of you Cydia apps are gone, you simply have to restore the backup you made with iTunes.

That’s your starting point in restoring all of your Cydia apps that you have backed up with PKGBackup.

Restoration of Cydia Apps

Of course, when all the data in your iPhone are wiped out, you’ve got to reinstall PKGBackup; just follow PKGBackup Installation guide at the beginning of this article. When everything is set and ready, please proceed to the steps below.

Step One: Launch PKGBackup to begin. It will automatically detect new packages installed in your iPhone as well as the previous apps that you’ve backed up.

You can tap on the small arrow to choose specific packages that you want to include or exclude during the restoration process.

Step Two: When everything is ready, tap on “Restore” button from the PKGBackup main screen to begin the restoration of your Cydia apps.

Step Three: It may take time downloading and installing all the Cydia apps, so you need a little patience. Let your iPhone do what it has to do and wait. When all the apps are restored, you will be prompted that it is done and that you need to reboot your iPhone. Do as instructed.

Once your iPhone is up, all of your Cydia apps are restored (except for those you’ve excluded).

Fortunately, iOS 4.0 and later releases opened the possibility to sync my notes to my email without the need to connect my iPhone to my computer with a USB cable.

This guide will walk you through in configuring IMAP and syncing your notes to your email account, in this case I will use Gmail.

First Things First

1. You”ve got to have your Gmail account before you can start doing this tutorial.

2. Your iPhone (iPod or iPad) should be running iOS 4.0 or later releases to be able to perform this guide perfectly.

How To Configure IMAP

Before you can actually sync your iPhone notes to your email, you will need to configure IMAP as it is needed.

Here are a few steps on how to configure IMAP on your iPhone.

Step 1: Enable IMAP in your Gmail account. Log into your Google email, then click on the “Settings” link located on top-right corner.

Step 2: Click on “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab. From there, you will be able to find the option to “Enable IMAP“. Don”t forget to click on “Save Changes” button for the new settings to take effect.

Step 3: Launch the “Settings” app in your iPhone, tap “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” then “Add Account“. Now, instead of tapping on “Gmail” choose “Other” below the screen.

Step 4: Tap on “Add Mail Account” to continue.

Step 5: Now you have to enter your name, email address, the password to your email, and if want you can add a description. Tap on the “Save” button on top-right corner when finish.

Step 6: You will now be asked to enter the Incoming Mail Server settings. For the Host Name, enter imap.gmail.com, the User Name is your Gmail account with @gmail.com, and the Password will be the one you are using to log into your Gmail account.

Step 7: You also have to enter the Outgoing Mail Server settings. The Host Name will smtp.gmail.com, and the rest are the same as with the Incoming Mail Server settings.

Step 8: If everything is done, tap on “Save” button. That’s just it.

How to Sync Notes With Your Email Account

The procedure above is very simple and straightforward. Once you”ve done it successfully, you are ready to syncing your notes from your iPhone to your email account.

Step 1: Launch “Settings” and tap “Mail, Contacts, Calendars“. You have to select the IMAP account you just created.

Step 2: After which, simply turn “Notes” on.

When “Notes” is turned on, it will automatically sync the notes you”ve made with your IMAP account. Furthermore, it will create a label “Notes” in your Gmail inbox labeling all of the notes synced into this category.

Alright, let’s try it out.

When you have properly configured the IMAP account and turned on the “Notes” option, you will see a new “Accounts” button in the navigation bar when you launch the Notes app. The navigation bar will look like this;

Just tap on the “Accounts” button and you will be able to see an account synced or connected with the Notes app. In this example, you can find my own account. You can tap on the account and start creating note.

All the notes you have created under your IMAP account will automatically be synced to your email account, in this case its Gmail.

That’s it. It works perfectly for me. I hope this tutorial can help you too.

Just like your computer, you can make a dual-boot iPhone, i.e. making it run on two operating systems alternatively. In this case, you will be using your iPhone 2G or 3G which may be lying around the corner not being attended by anyone. Just think of this guide as an experiment to see if iPhone can work using the OS of its biggest competitor, Android.

For those who wanted to check out some of the features of the Adroid system and have some access to iPhone 2G/3G, this is a great opportunity. You don’t even need a computer to do this tutorial, but we absolutely need a Cydia app for this one – Bootlace.

Overview of Bootlace

Basically, Bootlace is an iPhone app (jailbroken only) which enables you to install OpeniBoot and iDroid into your iPhone, 2G and 3G models only. You will also be able to configure OpeniBoot through its configuration page after the installation. Moreover, QuickBoot is also supported after Bootlace is successfully installed. QuickBoot is a feature which comes with Bootlace that will directly boot your iPhone to a selected OS without changing the default configuration settings.

Pre-Installation Requirements

Here are some of the things you should remember before performing this guide:

• It will work on iPhone 2G and 3G only.
• You must have jailbroken your iPhone using PwnageTool, Blackra1n and RedSnow. If your iPhone has been jailbroken using JailBreakMe and Spirit, it will not work as well.
• There were some conflicts between Backgrounder app and Bootlace, so it would be better to turn Backgrounder off when using the latter.

How to Add a Repository

This step is also very important so you cannot skip this one. What we will do here is to simply add a repository; if you’ve done something like this before, it would be much easier for you to understand this time.

Step 1. Launch Cydia and tap on ‘Manage‘ tab below the screen.

Step 2. There will be three options, tap on ‘Sources‘, then tap on ‘Edit‘ button located at the top-right corner of the screen.

Step 3. Now, tap on the ‘Add‘ button on the top-left corner, and enter the following in the field; ‘http://repo.neonkoala.co.uk‘ and tap ‘Add Source‘ button thereafter.

Step 4. After you add the address above, tap on ‘Return to Cydia‘ big button below your screen. Tap on ‘Done‘ button after that and you will be brought back to Sources list.

Basically, this is the whole process of adding a repository to make it easier for you to install any app from the developer you just added; in this case it’s Neonkoala.

Bootlace Installation

This is just a continuation of the previous steps so we will continue with the count.

Step 5. After doing step 4, you will be brought back to the page wherein you can select a Source. Tap on ‘Neonkoala.co.uk‘ then select ‘Bootlace‘ to open the package.

Step 6. Now you are ready to install Bootlace. Just tap on the ‘Install‘ button on the top-right corner, then ‘Confirm‘ your action.

Step 7. The installation will take only a short while, after which you will be presented with the following screen (please see screenshot). Tap on ‘Return to Cydia‘ button below to proceed.

The installation process will be smooth following these steps. Now we are ready to set up Bootlace.

Setting Up Bootlace

This is going to be different process so we will start our count from the first step onwards.

Step 1. After the installation, just press the ‘Home‘ button so that you’ll be brought back to the Springboard. From there, you will be able to find the Bootlace icon, tap on it to launch.

Step 2. Since it is your first time running Bootlace, it will automatically start downloading and patching the Kernel.

Step 3. The patching process is short, once done you will be prompted to reboot your iPhone. You don’t have much option but to tap on that ‘Reboot‘ button.

Step 4. After a reboot, launch Bootlace again. This time, there will be a welcome message, tap on ‘OK‘ button to proceed.

Step 5. This time, you need to install iDroid. Tap on the ‘iDroid‘ tab below your screen then tap on ‘Install‘ button thereafter.

Step 6. There will be a warning message. Just tap on ‘OK‘ button to proceed with the iDroid installation, and wait until it’s done.

Step 7. When the installation is complete, tap on ‘OpeniBoot‘ tab and then the ‘Install‘ button. We also need to install OpeniBoot.

Step 8. The installation will never take long enough; when it’s done, tap on ‘Configure‘ button.

Step 9. In this screen, you will be presented with options on how you would want your iPhone to boot; either boot with iOS or iDroid. Just don’t forget to tap on the ‘Save’ button located at the top-right corner of your screen.

Anyway, it is the Android OS 2.2.1 Froyo that you will be using here. Why don’t you take time navigating and discovering this OS with your iPhone?

What is iOSFlashVideo?

Actually, it is not an application. Rather, it is a workaround enabling you to stream flash videos without downloading the videos you want to watch. Above all, it is offered for free. As long as you have a good internet connection, you can watch flash videos from the supported sites.

What are the supported sites?

Unfortunately, YouTube is not one of them. Nevertheless, you can still enjoy watching flash movies and flash video clips from other sites. Here is the list of the supported sites:

• Vimeo
• Blip.tv
• Break
• DailyMotion
• Flickr Video
• MegaVideo

Important Note: When watching embedded videos such as those offered at MegaVideo, you need to install OPlayer or the OPlayer Lite.

Step 1: Launch ‘Safari’ from the Springboard.

Step 2: Point your browser to this site: http://www.iosflashvideo.fw.hu

Step 3: Add the site to your Bookmarks. Click on [+] button below your screen, then tap on “Add Bookmark” button.

Step 4: After adding the address to your bookmarks, click the “‘Save” button to continue.

Step 5: Now, tap on the “Bookmarks” button once again. This time you will be brought to your bookmark page. Tap on “Edit” button below your screen.

Step 6: You will be brought to a page where you need to choose a bookmark to edit; select iOSFlashVideo among the list.

Step 7: We will be editing the URL of the bookmark we saved in Step 4. We need to delete all the characters in the address BEFORE “javascript.” In other words, we will delete this: http://iosflashvideo.fw.hu/#.

Tap “Done” button when you finish.

Step 8: After performing the Step 7, you will be brought back to the bookmarks page; tap “Done” button until you get out of the bookmarks page. In this step you may need to tap on it twice.

Step 9: Now navigate through the supported sites and load a page containing a flash video. Once the page has loaded, click on “Bookmarks” button [+] and select iOSFlashVideo. After which, you will be able to stream the video you selected.

So far, this workaround works perfectly on any iDevice you may have; it works on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Since you will not be using any apps aside from Safari and OPlayer (whenever you are streaming embedded flash videos), there is not much problem you will encounter. However, if you can encounter some, please don’t hesitate to post it here so that we can update this post and look for common workarounds to fix such problems.

Perhaps many of the iPhone users do not know what hactivation means. Others may think of it as jailbreak. But no, hactivation is not jailbreaking.

To hactivate is to open or unlock your iPhone for other mobile operators or carriers. For example, you bought your iPhone from O2, it follows that you will not be able to use SIM cards other than O2′s unless you will hactivate your iPhone; that’s the only time you will be able to use other carriers.

What does Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM) do?

SAM will trick iTunes and iPhone to create legitimate activation tickets despite the fact that it is unlocked by ultrasn0w. It simply means that you can enjoy the benefits of push applications. Aside from that, this will increase your iPhone’s battery life.

Note: you will have to jailbreak your iPhone first to be able to perform the following steps.

Part 1: Subscriber Artificial Module Installation

Step 1: Launch Cydia, tap on “Manage” tab at the bottom and tap on “Sources“.

Step 2: Upon tapping on the ‘Sources’, you can see an “Edit” button on the upper-right, tap on it to open. Press “Add” button on the upper-left, and enter the following address: http://repo.bingner.com.

Step 3: After entering the address above, you will be prompted with “Return to Cydia” button, tap on it to go back to Cydia list of sources. Select “Binger” and choose “SAM“.

Step 4: Once you open SAM, you are ready to install it by pressing the “Install” button located top-right.

Step 5: Since we will be installing two packages, we will queue them first. Tap on “Continue Queuing“, and press “Binger.com repo” button on the upper-left corner of the screen.

Step 6: Now, tap on “SAMPrefs” to open the package and press “Install” button, and “Confirm” your action. The installation will not be long.

Step 7: Once the installation is done, tap on “Restart Springboard” button.

Part 2: RedSn0w Installation and Firmware Restoration

Step 8: Now, download the latest version of RedSn0w (0.9.6b6) for Windows or Mac. Unzip the package when the download in complete, and launch the application when ready.

Step 9: When RedSn0w is opened, you will be prompted to browse for IPSW file.

Step 10: Click “Browse” button and navigate through the directory where you have downloaded/saved the IPSW file. If you have jailbroken your iPhone, you must have used such file.

Note: If you are using iPhone 3GS, RedSn0w will ask you about its bootroom. Click “Yes” if your iPhone uses new bootroom and “No” if it doesn’t. Check out this article if you don’t know how to check the bootroom version of your iPhone 3GS.

Step 11: If you’ve chosen the right IPSW file, redsn0w will prompt you that verification was successful. Click the “Next” button to continue; redsn0w will then prepare the jailbreak data.

Step 12: When you are doing the jailbreak process, you can choose whichever options you want. However, in this case, you just have to choose “Deactivate“, then click “Next” button to continue.

Step 13: Connect your iPhone to your computer, then turn it OFF; click “Next” button if ready.

Step 14: You will be guided to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Just follow the screenshots below.

Step 15: Your iPhone will reboot and redsn0w will start uploading new RAM Disk and Kernel. Once done, you just have to click on the “Finish” button.

Part 3: Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM) Settings

Step 16: Launch “Settings” app, tap on “SAM” to open and make sure “De-Activate iPhone” option is enabled.

Step 17: Now, launch iTunes and let your iPhone activate. There are times when iTunes prompts you that your SIM is invalid, if it happens, manually select the right carrier instead of using “Auto Detect” then click on SIMID. And, that’s it.

Basically, this guide is petty simple when you are doing it yourself. You won’t even find it hard to follow.

Probably file a report saying you lost your iPhone, or tell your family and friends to help you find it.  In short, you are helpless and you started waiting that somebody would return your lost iPhone to your doorstep. But you know that seldom happens.

The good news is, there is something you can do to prevent or make the probability of finding your iPhone higher.

When iOS 4.2 was released, the “Find My iPhone” service was also offered free for iPhone 4 users. Previously, this service was offered $99 for annual subscription.

What’s in it for you?

Well, through “Find My iPhone”, you will be able to locate your iPhone easily on a map; you can also send a message like, “This is a lost iPhone. Please contact me through this number xxx-xxxx. Thank you.” The point is, at least, you can do something to retrieve your lost device.

Important Notes

Before we begin with the set up process, here are some things you have to consider.

1. You must have an Apple ID and Password.

2. You must have a MobileMe account.

3. Make sure that your iPhone is running the latest iOS 4.2. Otherwise, this will not work.

4. You have to install ‘Find My iPhone’ app first. You can get your copy from iTunes for free, or you can download it by following this link.

How to Create MobileMe Account and Set Up Find My iPhone

Not everybody has a MobileMe account, if you are one of them, this tutorial is for you.

Step 1: Launch “Settings” app from the Springboard, then tap on “Mail, Contacts, Calendars“.

Step 2: Tap on “Add Account“, then “MobileMe“.

Step 3: Enter your Apple ID and Password. If you’ve tried purchasing any items from iTunes before, you must have your ID and Password. Otherwise, just tap on “Create Free Apple ID” to acquire one. Also, remember to verify your account after you signed up.

Step 4: Now, return to MobileMe’s screen, and simply switch “Find My iPhone” button ON, and confirm your action.

Basically, that’s how the setting up of “Find My iPhone” app goes. The installation is very straightforward, so you’ll find it easy to follow.

How to Use Find My iPhone

After doing the steps above, you are now ready to use or to test your if “Find My iPhone” really locates your iPhone’s location.

Step 1: Launch a browser in your computer or laptop and point to http://www.me.com/find. MobileMe will automatically locate your iPhone on the map and through that page, you will be able to do the following:

Step 2: Display a message and Play Sound. You can customize the message to convince the person to call or return your iPhone. Also, you can play a sound for two minutes should you have a feeling that you just misplaced your gadget.

Step 3: Remotely Lock your iPhone. This is very important especially if you have personal information stored in your gadget. This way, the person who finds your iPhone will not be able to access it.

Step 4: Remotely Erase all the Data. This is, by far, the last resort you can do to protect your privacy. You can wipe all the data out of your iPhone so that even if you cannot retrieve it, at least, the person who can find your iPhone will never know personal info about you.

iPhone is just one of the media you can use “Find My iPhone“. If you have an iPad or iPod (4G) this app will also come handy. So, what do you think about this app?

Of course, it is still very important to make your iPhone secure at all times. Take good care of it and do not put it in places you can hardly remember. More often, it is out of carelessness that you’ll lose your gadgets. Think of it as a person who knows more about you and all your secrets especially if you are keeping personal information.

Your iPhone comes with its default browser — the mobile Safari. The problem is, not all of the iPhone users love this browser. There are several good browsers you can use with your iPhone to make your browsing experience a pleasant one. Among these browsers are Opera mini, Skyfire, 360 browser, VanillaSurf, etc…

You may have used one of these, but how can you make your favourite browser the default browser of your iPhone?

How to Change iPhone Default Browser

Here is the tutorial you can follow to change your default iPhone browser. But first, you should know that this guide is intended for jailbroken iPhones only. As of this writing, Apple only allows you to change the default search engine but not the default browser. So, we will be utilizing a hack called Browser Changer.

The First Way

Step 1. Launch Cydia from the Springboard and click on ‘Sections’ tab.

Step 2. Scroll down a bit and try to look for ‘Tweaks’ option. Once found, tap on it and you will be presented with a list of packages.

Step 3. Choose ‘Browser Changer’ among the packages. Tap on it to open the package.

Step 4. Tap on ‘Install’ button to the upper right corner of the screen.

Step 5. You have to ‘Confirm’ your last action.

Step 6. When installation is complete tap on ‘Restart Springboard’.

Step 7. Once you have restarted the springboard, launch ‘Settings’ app and tap ‘Browser Changer’.

Step 8. You will have plenty of options as to what browser you want make as default.

The Second Way

Step 1. Launch Cydia from your Springboard.

Step 2. Tap on the ‘Search’ tab and key in “browser changer”.

Step 3. Now, open the package and follow the rest of the steps above.

The next steps would be easier since you just have to follow the steps already mentioned in the first way of installing and configuring browser changer hack.

That’s it! You will be able to open emails or browse the net using your favourite browser. Please note that in Opera mini, the automatic page loading on start up is not supported. It may not be a compulsory on your part, however, if you want to break the boredom of using the same browser over and over again, this tutorial may be a great help.

All the SMS or text messages inside your iPhone are handled by a database. Jailbreaking your iPhone open the possibility of manipulating your SMS database and export all the data within. The CSV file can also be accessed using Microsoft Excel and equivalent program.

This tutorial will walk you through the process to backup and export your SMS as a CSV file to your Mac.

Download the Tools Needed

These are the tools you will need for this tutorial.

1. iPhone Explorer

2. SQLite Database Browser

These tools are available for Mac and Windows platform; make sure you download the correct version.

Backup SMS Database

Connect your iPhone to your Mac through USB.

1. Launch the iPhone Explorer and navigate through “/private/var/mobile/Library/SMS.“.

2. Look for the file SMS.db and download it to your Mac.

Export iPhone SMS

1. Launch SQLite Database Browser you have downloaded a while back.

2. Click “File -> Open Database“. You will then be asked to choose a file to open. Navigate through the directory where you have download SMS.db.

This is an example of the structure of iPhone SMS database.

3. When SMS.db is open, you can export it the way you want. Click on “File -> Export” and choose “Table as CSV File“.

4. You will be prompted to “Choose table to export as CSV text“. Choose table name as “Message” and click on the “Export” button thereafter.

5. You will then be asked for the location to save the CSV file. Locate the directory you want to save it to and give it a filename.

6. Try to open the CSV file with iWork’s Numbers or Microsoft Excel to manipulate the data inside. When you open it, you will see a few columns with corresponding values. You can actually edit those values and save the file as CSV, still.

The point of this tutorial is to help you backup, export and even import all your SMS data to your other devices. Or, you can also use this method to archive your text messages for future reference, that way, you will not be able to lose messages you treasure most.

What other way do you use to backup your iPhone’s SMS?

Fortunately, iPhone comes with an Internet tethering feature. It converts your device into a modem and shares your Internet connection with your other devices. The bad news is, not all carriers offer tethering option which is a good reason why you should jailbreak your iPhone to be able to share your connection.

I have used two apps which can turn your iPhone into a WiFi hotspot. To cut the story short, here they are:

TetherMe Installation

Sbingner and Cirdan developed this app which supports jailbroken iPhones only. It has been tested to work efficiently with iPhones running iOS 3.0 to 4.0.1. I was wondering if this app will also work with iOS 4.1, so I tried to search for reviews of TetherMe but I never found a clue. The good thing is, TetherMe is worth $1.99 only so everybody can afford it.

To install TetherMe to your iPhone, you just have to:

1. Launch Cydia and query “TetherMe.”

2. Purchase the App for $1.99 and install.

3. You have to reboot your iPhone after the installation to set TetherMe into effect.

4. Navigate through Settings -> General -> Network and set Internet Tethering to “On” to enjoy its function.

TetherMe works perfectly on iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1 jailbroken using Limera1n.

MyWi Installation

If TetherMe turns your iPhone into a modem, MyWi will turn it into a router allowing other devices to connect to the Internet simultaneously. Since it is also a Cydia app, only jailbroken iPhones would be able to enjoy its features. Moreover, it is stable and has been tested to work perfectly on iPhones running iOS 3.0 and up. Well, the bad news is, it is worth $9.99. It may sound so expensive but the price is just right if you want to turn your place into a WiFi hotspot using your iPhone. You can try out its trial version and see for yourself if it is worth your money. Without further adieu, here are the steps on how to install MyWi.

1. Launch Cydia app and query “Rock App“, then tap on “Install” button.

2. You will be able to find a Rock icon on your Springboard, tap on it to launch.

Note: If you have already installed the Rock App in your iPhone, proceed to the following steps without performing the first to steps. Otherwise, you have to create a new Rock account if it is your first time launching the application. Rock account is free so you don’t have to worry.

3. Once the app is open, you can see MyWi among the options, tap on it to start installation. Click on “Start Trial” if you want to test it out first. However, should you decide to purchase the app directly, click on “Purchase” button. In this case, we will try out the trial version.

4. Installation will take a while to complete. After which you will be prompted to soft-restart your iPhone, just proceed as instructed.

5. Look for MyWi icon and tap on it to launch. You will, then, be prompted with an agreement which you are entitled to accept to be able to use the app.

6. That’s pretty it. You will now be able to enjoy its features. To increase security of your connection, or to avoid others to use it without your knowledge, you can enable WEP security and choose your own WEP key.

7. Switch “WiFi Tethering” On and MyWi will automatically convert your iPhone into a WiFi hotspot.

So far, these are the best apps you can use to share your Internet connection from your iPhone to your other devices. It will not take so much of your time to complete the installation. But you have to remember that these apps work only on jailbroken iPhones; if you haven’t done so, try these tutorials here.

I purchased an app from App Store which I think I can use with my iPad; I was wrong. So, I decided to return it to Apple and claim for a refund. Fortunately, the amount I paid for the app was credited back to my account. I wasn’t even expecting it to happen as Apple sales policy says that all transactions made or purchases are final and cannot be refunded. Maybe I was just so lucky…

Read before you ask for refunds

Anyway, there are certain situations that Apple might consider when someone asks for a refund, and they are as follow;

1. You are an iPhone user but you purchased an iPad version of the app or vice versa. Obviously, the app you purchased will be of no use.

2. You have the intention of purchasing a game but there are a dozen of similar names and the one you finally purchased is not what you are looking for. You can return it to Apple and request for a refund.

3. You bought a music track from iTunes but has different format and is not playable with your iPhone or iPod.

4. You have ordered a movie from the iTunes store but you found out that it would take so much time to download because of its size. When you cancel the download, you will still be charged for the movie. You can create a dispute about such transaction.

Recently, I came across with this problem and here’s what I did;

How to ask for a refund from Apple

Look for the email receipt from iTunes when you purchased the app. From there, you will be able to find a link which says “Report a Problem” and that’s exactly what you are going to do.

Now you need to reason out clearly why you are claiming for a refund from the app you purchased. First, you have to choose the problem which is closely applicable to your situation. Then, in the comments field, fill in the reason why.

If your reason is acceptable enough, then the amount you paid for the app will be credited back to your account within 24-45 hours and you will receive an email similar to this.

There is another way of claiming for a refund, try to check below;

Launch the iTunes Store and look for a drop down menu at the upper right corner in your browser; click on ‘Account‘. You will, then, be brought to your account information page. Look for ‘Purchase History‘ button and click on it.

In the purchase history page, a list of all your purchases will be presented. Look for the app you are having problems with and click on the ‘Report a Problem‘ link in line with it.

The next window will ask you to choose the kind of problem you are experiencing with the app. Also, you need to fill in the reason why you are claiming for a refund. As long as your reason is valid and logical, there is no need to worry about.

As I mentioned earlier, I should have been lucky to have received a refund because Apple is so strict when it comes to refunds. For those who have accidentally purchased an app and want to return it, you may try these steps and see for yourself how it goes with Apple. What I can advice you if Apple won’t issue a refund is, move on!

Now, follow these steps to upgrade to iOS 4.1 without updating to the latest baseband version.

Step 1: Download TinyUmbrella

You will have to use an application called TinyUmbrella. Now, you have to visit TinyUmbrella Official Website to download the application. After which, you have to download iOS 4.1 firmware here.

Step 2: Run TinyUmbrella

Launch this little program to start the process. Make sure you have switched off your firewall or allow your firewall to run this application. It is advisable that you run it as administrator if you are using Win Vista or Win 7.

Step 3: Connect iPhone

Make sure your iPhone is connected to your computer and that TinyUmbrella has detected it and its firmware.

You can click on ‘Save My SHSH‘ button to save a backup of your SHSH blobs should you need to downgrade your iPhone in the future.

Step 4: Start TSS Server

You may now click on ‘Start TSS Server‘ button so that TinyUmbrella can start killing iTunes. By doing so, you will be able to see ‘Running’ status just below the button.

Step 5: Launch iTunes

While TSS server is running, launch iTunes to restore iOS 4.1 firmware.

Step 6: Restore Firmware

Select your iPhone among the list of devices in iTunes. Press and hold the ‘Shift‘ key then click on the ‘Restore‘ button. This will let you navigate through the directory where you have download the iO 4.1 firmware a while ago. Be sure to look for iPhone3,1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw.

Step 7: iTunes Error Prompt

Sit back and wait for the process to be done. An iTunes error 1004 will be your sign that the whole process is complete. This error simply means that your iPhone is running iOS 4.1 and has preserved its baseband version. Thus, you can use UltraSn0w to unlock it and use other carriers.

Step 8: Kick Device Out of Recovery Mode

Now, go back to TinyUmbrella and click on the ‘Kick Device Out of Recovery‘ button to conclude this process. But make sure you still have your device connected to your computer. By clicking that button, your iPhone will automatically reboot.

After the reboot, your iPhone should be running iOS 4.1 with the same baseband version, 01.59.00.

This month, there are two jailbreaking tools released for jailbreakers – limera1n and greenpois0n. Having this baseband version, you can use limera1n to jailbreak your iPhone and use UltraSn0w to unlock it.

1. Update Firmware

Simply like computers, your iPhone’s operating system (iOS) has vulnerabilities. That’s even the reason why versions are released one after another. More often than not, first releases contain more security vulnerabilities. Thus, if you continue using such firmware, your iPhone is vulnerable than those which are already updated and you will become a perfect target for hackers.

Fortunately, Apple offers easy way to update the firmware of your iPhone. You can do this with the help of iTunes. Here’s how…

1. Connect your iPhone to computer and launch iTunes.

2. Select your iPhone among the devices listed. You must be seeing the following screenshot:

2. Enable iPhone Passcode Protection

By enabling Passcode Protection on your iPhone, it will ask for a 4-digit passcode whenever you wake it up from sleep. This will protect your iPhone from other users. It may be a hassle but remember that there are times when you can misplace your iPhone.

How to Enable Passcode Protection

1. Open ‘Settings‘ on your iPhone and tap on ‘General‘.

2. Now, select ‘Passcode Lock‘ and tap ‘Turn Passcode On‘.

3. You must enter 4 digits as your passcode; re-enter the same to confirm.

4. Press on the Power button to put your iPhone to sleep and press it again to wake it up. This time, you will be asked to enter your passcode.

3. Set Auto-Lock

As a follow up of step 2, this iPhone feature is also important to implement strict security on your iPhone. Setting auto-lock means that your iPhone will automatically sleep after certain duration of time of being idle.

How to Enable Auto-Lock

1. Open ‘Settings‘ on your iPhone and tap on ‘General‘.

2. Tap ‘Auto-Lock‘ and set the duration; the sooner, the better. But I think 2 minutes is just good enough.

4. Disable Automatic Network Association

iPhone is built to store and retain association settings of all the Wi-Fi networks it connects to. Thus, it enables iPhone to automatically reconnect to these networks if it is within range. Although it is a hassle on your part, it is still recommended you disable this function as secured networks are easy to spoof.

How to Make your iPhone Forget a Network

1. Open ‘Settings‘ on your iPhone and select Wi-Fi.

2. Tap on the blue arrow beside the network you want your iPhone to forget.

3. Select ‘Forget This Network‘.

5. Disable Javascript and Plug-ins

Just like the browser of computers, iPhone’s safari browser also uses or runs javascript and plug-ins. And some people use them as yet another exploit to be able to access your device. You have to balance usability and security; if there are certain important websites that you have to access more often, then you should err on the side of usability. Otherwise, it is a wise idea to disable them.

1. Open ‘Settings‘ on your iPhone and tap Safari.

2. From there, you will be able to turn Javascript and Plug-ins off.

Installation of Lockdown

Step 1. Launch Cydia from the Springboard and tap on “Sections” tab at the bottom of the screen.

Step 2. Navigate through different sections and select “System“.

Step 3. Now, try to navigate through the system apps and select Lockdown, developed by BigBoss system.

Step 4. Once you opened the package, tap on the “Install” button at the upper-right corner of your screen. Installation will not start unless you “Confirm” your action.

Step 5. Installation may take just a little while to complete. Once it is completed, it would be impossible for you to miss the “Restart Springboard” button at the bottom of the screen. After restarting the Springboard, you will be able to find the icon of Lockdown app. Just tap on it to launch.

As far as installation is concerned, that’s how you do it. You can also do a quick search on Cydia to find the Lockdown package.

Operating Lockdown

Alright, we are done with the installation. Now, let’s try to operate this app and how you can set password to individual apps in your iPhone.

Step 1. Launch Lockdown app from the Springboard. When it is your first time to launch the app, you will be asked to enter your “Safety Word” and “Password“. You just have to enter them and tap on “Continue” button. Make sure you can remember your own safety word and password.

Step 2. Lockdown will, then, present you a list of applications. Now, you just have to select which ones you want to be password-protected and tap on the “Lock” button thereafter. You can do this to all of the applications you want protected.

To avoid confusion, you will be able to know which applications are protected if you can see a padlock icon on the right of the protected apps just like the ones you can see on the screenshot below.

Step 3. Now, let’s try it out! Press the Home button to return to the Springboard. Launch the protected application and you will be asked of the password.

As I mentioned earlier, there is a downside of password-protecting your iPhone apps. One of which is that you have to enter the password every time you use the protected applications. It could be a hassle on your part especially when you are in a hurry. So, I advise you to protect the apps which you don’t want others to open when they are using your iPhone. Also, try to unprotect frequently used apps for your sake.
